Brothers and Sisters in Recovery π
Play the tape forward.
When thoughts of using begin to creep in and those old bugaboos start whispering in your ear, stop for a moment and press play—just like we used to do with an old VHS tape. Instead of focusing on the temporary escape our addiction promises, let the whole story play out in your mind.
Don't stop at the first few seconds. Keep watching.
See yourself making that first decision. Watch as one bad choice turns into another. Remember the lies, the broken trust, the guilt, the shame, the fear, and the loneliness that always followed. Think about the people who were hurt, the opportunities that disappeared, the promises that were broken, and the peace that addiction stole from your life.
Our disease has a way of showing us only the highlight reel. It edits out the pain and tries to convince us that this time will be different. But if we're honest with ourselves, we've seen this movie before. We already know how it ends.
Recovery gives us the opportunity to write a different ending.
When we play the tape forward, we remind ourselves that one decision can change everything—for better or for worse. We remember how hard we fought to get where we are today. Every meeting attended, every phone call made, every honest conversation, every difficult day we stayed clean, and every lesson learned has brought us to this moment. Why trade all of that for something that has never delivered on its promises?
Instead, picture another tape. See yourself reaching out to another recovering addict. See yourself walking into a meeting. Feel the relief that comes from sharing honestly instead of suffering in silence. Picture yourself waking up tomorrow with a clear mind, a grateful heart, and another day clean. Imagine your family seeing the person recovery has allowed you to become. That's a future worth protecting.
Recovery isn't about never having thoughts of using. It's about knowing what to do when those thoughts show up. We don't have to believe every thought that crosses our minds. We can pause, pray, call someone, go to a meeting, read recovery literature, and remember that feelings pass. Cravings fade. Difficult moments don't last forever, but the consequences of picking up can.
Today, choose to play the tape all the way through. Let your past remind you why your future is worth fighting for. One decision, one hour, and one day at a time, we continue building a life we no longer have to escape from.
Keep coming back. Stay in the middle of the herd. Easy does it, but do it. Progress, not perfection. Just for today, choose recovery.
With love and gratitude,

Gary,
ReplyDeleteI like this twist. Most of us know how the first scene starts, but recovery teaches us to watch all the way to the credits.
These days I don't just play the tape forward... I ask myself, "Which story do I want to wake up in tomorrow?" That answer has become a whole lot easier.
Thanks for another reminder that our future is written one choice at a time. π¬
